Exam season can feel overwhelming for the whole family — not just the student sitting the papers. If your child has GCSE science exams coming up, here's a practical week-by-week guide to help you support them without adding to the pressure.
4 Weeks Before Exams
This is the time to get organised, not to panic.
- Print or download the exam timetable and put it somewhere visible
- Help your child identify which topics they feel least confident about — these need the most revision time
- Set up a simple revision timetable together, spreading subjects across the weeks
- Stock up on revision resources — retrieval sheets, flashcards, and past papers are the most effective tools
3 Weeks Before Exams
Revision should be well underway by now.
- Check in daily — not to quiz them, but to ask how they're feeling and whether they need anything
- Encourage short, focused sessions (25–45 minutes) with proper breaks rather than long, exhausting marathons
- Make sure they're sleeping enough — sleep is when memory consolidation happens. Late-night cramming is counterproductive
2 Weeks Before Exams
The pressure often peaks here. Your role is to be a calm presence.
- Encourage past paper practice under timed conditions — this is the single most effective last-stage revision tool
- Help them mark their own papers using mark schemes (available free on exam board websites)
- Watch for signs of anxiety: sleep disruption, appetite changes, withdrawal. If these are significant, speak to their school
The Week of Exams
- Light revision only — going over key facts and formulas, not trying to learn new content
- Prioritise good sleep, proper meals, and fresh air
- Have everything ready the night before: stationery, water bottle, ID if needed
- Remind them that one paper does not define them
After Each Exam
Resist the urge to discuss how it went in detail — it's done and can't be changed. Acknowledge their effort, let them decompress, and help them refocus on the next paper.
