How Parents Can Support GCSE Science Revision at Home (Without Being a Scientist)

If your child is heading into GCSE science exams and you're not sure how to help — you're not alone. Most parents feel out of their depth when it comes to physics equations or chemistry calculations. The good news? You don't need to know the content to make a huge difference.

1. Create a Revision-Friendly Environment

Science revision requires focus. Help your child by:

  • Setting up a quiet, clutter-free study space
  • Removing phone distractions during revision sessions (even 25 minutes makes a difference)
  • Keeping healthy snacks and water nearby — the brain needs fuel

2. Use the 'Teach Me' Technique

Ask your child to explain a topic to you as if you know nothing. This is one of the most powerful revision strategies in existence — called the Feynman Technique. If they can explain it simply, they understand it. If they stumble, they've found a gap to work on. You don't need to understand the answer — just ask the question.

3. Help Them Build a Revision Timetable

Many students waste revision time deciding what to revise. Sit down together and map out the weeks before each exam. Prioritise topics they find hardest, and make sure they're spacing out subjects rather than cramming one at a time.

4. Encourage Retrieval Practice Over Re-Reading

Re-reading notes feels productive but is one of the least effective revision strategies. Retrieval practice — actively recalling information from memory — is far more powerful. Flashcards, practice questions, and retrieval sheets (like the ones we sell at Mrs F Science!) are all great tools.

5. Watch for Burnout

Revision marathons without breaks lead to diminishing returns. Encourage the Pomodoro method: 25 minutes of focused revision, 5-minute break, repeat. After four cycles, take a longer break. Sleep is also non-negotiable — memory consolidation happens overnight.

6. Celebrate Small Wins

Finished a topic? Nailed a practice paper? Acknowledge it. Positive reinforcement keeps motivation high during a long revision season.

You don't need a science degree to support your child through GCSEs. Consistency, encouragement, and the right resources go a long way. Browse our revision resources to find topic-by-topic retrieval sheets for AQA, Edexcel, and OCR.
